Riaza River
The Riaza River originates in the Fuente del Cancho, a location within the Pedroza beech forest in the municipality of Riofrío de Riaza, in the province of Segovia. The river flows for over 110 km until it reaches the Duero River, in the municipality of Berlangas de Roa, in the province of Burgos.
The river is named after the town of Haza, in the province of Burgos, which it crosses shortly before it flows into the Duero.
The river's principal tributaries include the Riaguas and Aguisejo rivers, as well as the Barahona and Riofresno streams.
The area between the municipalities of Maderuelo, Valdecavas de Montejo and Montejo de la Vega de la Serrezuela, belonging to Segovia, is undoubtedly the most outstanding area of the riverbed. This area includes the Natural Park of Las Hoces of the River Riaza, declared a Natural Park in 2005. It is an area of great botanical, geological and faunistic interest and value, covering more than 6,000 hectares.
The vegetation is characterised by an abundance of elms (Ulmus sp.), poplars (Populus alba), alders (Alnus glutinosa) and ash trees (Fraxinus sp.), species typical of riverside areas. As well as the presence of shrub vegetation such as: junipers (Juniperus sabina), common hawthorns (Crataegus monogyna), rose hips (Rosa dumetorum), Portuguese oaks (Quercus faginea) and holm oaks (Quercus ilex).
In terms of fauna, this Natural Park is renowned for its colony of griffon vultures (Gyps fulvus), one of the largest in the Iberian Peninsula. Other birds of prey such as Egyptian vultures (Neophron percnopterus), peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus) and short-toed eagles (Circaetus gallicus) can also be seen here, as well as various rock birds.
