La Vid
The district is situated equidistant from the other two districts that comprise the municipality of La Vid and Barrios: Guma and Zuzones. Linares de la Vid is a company that honours the strong winemaking tradition based on grapes and wine that exists throughout the Ribera del Duero region. This is reflected in the company's name and coat of arms.
Linares de la Vid is a village that was established because of the construction of numerous reservoirs in Spain during the 1950s. The construction project planned for the Ayllón mountain range in Segovia would have flooded the village of Linares de Arroyo. To avoid this, the National Colonisation Institute purchased land near the hamlet of Guma and established La Vid. He relocated the displaced residents of Linares de Arroyo to 56 newly constructed houses and renamed the town Linares de La Vid, in honour of his hometown. However, it is now more commonly known as La Vid.
A 16th-century stone bridge welcomes visitors to La Vid from its eastern entrance, allowing travellers to flank the 70-metre-wide Duero River at this stage. The most notable feature of La Vid is the Monastery of Santa María de la Vid, which houses a community of Augustinian monks. However, the complex is not open to the public, so it is advisable to enquire beforehand to arrange a visit. Should you wish to circumvent the monastery, you will encounter a straightforward justice roll, classified as an Asset of Cultural Interest and situated in farmland, just off the road that leads south to the village wine cellars. The scrolls were stone markers that indicated the administrative status of the place.
The Chapel of la Virgen del Monte, located at the municipal boundary with Soria, is accessed via a road carved into the rock. The Monastery of Santa María de la Vid has been linked to this location since ancient times. According to legend, the monastery was founded following the miraculous apparition of an image of María to King Alfonso VII in this valley. The Brotherhood of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción del Monte is currently responsible for the maintenance of the grotto and its access points. Annually, in August and September, the brotherhood undertakes a pilgrimage to demonstrate its reverence for the Virgin. The legend associated with this chapel also connects the oak grove in the vicinity to a significant historical occurrence: the renowned Afrenta de Corpes to the daughters of the Cid, as recounted in the Cantar of the hero from Burgos.
The village of La Vid is closely linked to the monastery, which is why it celebrates Saint Augustine, the patron saint of the Augustinian monks, at the end of August. To commemorate their roots, the people of Vitoria celebrate the feast of San Juan, the patron saint of Linares del Arroyo, which no longer exists.
