Agüeira River (LIC Agüeira Basin)
Although the Agüeira River originates in Galicia, specifically in the council of Fonsagrada (Lugo), it is considered an Asturian river. Its source is located at an elevation of 850 m, it flows for 43 km through the municipalities of Santa Eulalia de Oscos, San Martín de Oscos, and Pesoz, receiving contributions from other rivers and small streams, including the rivers Ahio and Bercial. Eventually, it joins the Navia River in the area of the Doiras reservoir.
Historically, the river's robust flow and energy were harnessed for milling operations and various hydraulic structures along its course. Today, the Agüeira River hosts a large population of trout.
Recognised as a Site of Community Interest (LIC) since 2004 and a Special Area of Conservation (ZEC) since 2014, this protected zone spans an area of 1.74 km2, encompassing several municipalities in Asturias such as Boal, Grandas de Salime, Ibias, Illano, Pesoz, San Martín de Oscos, San Tirso de Abres, Santa Eulalia de Oscos, Taramundi, Vegadeo, and Villanueva de Oscos. In Galicia, it includes A Fonsagrada, Legueira de Muñiz, and Ribeira de Piquín.
The Agüeira River basin boasts a highly natural environment characterised by riverside vegetation and scrubland, including heather, carballeda, and escobonales. The fauna in the area is diverse, featuring amphibians like the common grass frog, common salamander, and newt; birds such as the short-toed eagle, Montagu's harrier, and kestrel; mammals like the stoat, common weasel, wild cat, wolf, and marten; and reptiles such as the collared snake, Galician lizard, and Cantabrian viper.
