Hermitage of Our Lady of Bedramón
The Hermitage of Our Lady of Bedramón is in the parish of San Martín del Valledor in the Asturian council of Allande. Originally established as a Sanctuary, it stands proudly along a section of the Primitive Way, the revered path of the Way of St. James that crosses the interior of Asturias and Galicia.
Dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, this sacred site acquired the name Hermitage of Our Lady of Bedramón due to its location atop the mountain. The name derives from the Latin vetera mons, meaning "old mountain". While numerous churches, hermitages, and chapels across Spain honour Our Lady of the Assumption, the unique setting led to the distinctive name.
The exact date of the sanctuary's construction remains unknown, but historical records indicate the existence of the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Bedramón since 1654. The present hermitage stands in place of the original sanctuary, which succumbed to fire during the Spanish Civil War. Built upon an ancient prehistoric necropolis, the current structure comprises a single rectangular nave, with an elevated presbytery and a gabled roof. Stone columns support two porticoed spaces—one covering the entrance staircase and the other gracing the side of the chapel.
The Hermitage of Our Lady of Bedramón becomes a focal point during the celebration of the Marian feast in honour of Our Lady of the Assumption on the 15th of August.
