Pomar de las Montañas
Pomar de las Montañas, officially known as El Pumar, is a small village nestled in the parish of Las Montañas within the council of Cangas de Narcea. This otherwise quiet village has found renewed life, thanks to a hotel complex that undertook the restoration of all its houses, transforming them into accommodations for rural tourism. While Pomar de las Montañas retains the essence of traditional Asturian architecture, it seamlessly integrates modern comforts, offering a unique blend of 21st-century amenities and historical charm. Today, the village buzzes with visitors seeking a peaceful retreat surrounded by nature.
Situated in one of the most inhospitable environments in Asturias, Pomar de las Montañas is over 15 km away from the nearest inhabited centre, Armenande, accessible only through forest trails and paths. The surrounding hills are covered by an extensive forest of over 4 million radiata pines (Pinus insignis), introduced to Spain from southern California in the 19th century. This pine forest not only shapes the landscape but also serves as a habitat for diverse flora and fauna, including wild boars (Sus scrofa), chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica parva), capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus), golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos homeyeri) and foxes (Vulpes vulpes). Notably, the area is a transit point for the emblematic brown bear of Asturias (Ursus arctos arctos), so it is advisable to keep an eye out for wildlife.
Pomar de las Montañas serves as a gateway to an extensive network of forest trails, offering ideal routes for hiking and cycling enthusiasts. These trails lead to high peaks providing panoramic views of the Pomar River valley, traverse the tranquil and secluded forests, follow the banks of the Pumar River alongside trout (Salmo trutta) and otters (Lutra lutra), and unveil cultural trails such as the Gold Route where visitors can find Roman mining vestiges from the past.
