Porley
Porley, officially known as Porḷḷéi in Asturian, incorporating the phoneme of the che vaqueira /ʎ/, stands as one of the seven villages, comprising locations, hamlets, and settlements within the parish of Santianes. Porley holds the distinction of having the highest number of inhabited houses among these places.
The pivotal building defining Santianes and its associated villages as a parish is the church of San Juan de Porley. Situated just south of Porley, nestled amid a plain between the Antrago River and the hill supporting the Santianes de Porley farmhouse, this church features a medieval masonry façade that has undergone periodic restoration. These renovations, aligned with the materials and architectural styles of their respective eras, have touched both the exterior and interior of the church. Notably, the interior houses a Romanesque baptismal font adorned with a series of arches, providing a glimpse into the parish's origins dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries. In a 1980 restoration, the niches of the cemetery surrounding the nave were annexed to the church.
Festivities in honor of Saint John, the patron saint, are joyously celebrated by the residents of Porley and the wider Santianes parish. This eagerly anticipated event unfolds over a day filled with liturgical services, vermouth sessions, and a lively music festival where the resonant tones of bagpipes harmonize with the vibrant rhythms of the celebration, echoing into the early morning hours.
