Valdemurio reservoir
The Valdemurio reservoir is located on the Senda del Oso Nature Trail and collects water from the river Trubia, which is known as the river Quirós at this stretch.
It was built in 1968 and has a surface area of 196 km2. A hydroelectric power station uses the 138-metre drop in level to generate electricity.
The area has recreational areas, a bar, parking areas, and canoe and bicycle rental facilities. Fishing and various water sports are regularly enjoyed on the reservoir. There are also numerous hiking and cycling routes in the surrounding area.
At the tail end of the reservoir is the Las Agüeras Recreational Area and towards the middle part of the reservoir, a detour on the AS-229 provides access to the Valdemurio Recreational Area. Next to this recreational area is the Las Ubiñas-La Mesa Natural Park information point, whose information can be consulted here.
The Senda del Oso Nature Trail crosses the Valdemurio reservoir by means of a footbridge from which there are wonderful views of the reservoir.
In addition to the numerous activities that can be carried out there, it is also a place of special interest for aquatic bird watching and sighting of brown bears.
The vegetation in the area is characterised by ancient sweet chestnut trees (Castanea sativa), willows (Salix spp.), ash trees (Fraxinus spp.) and other typical riverside species.
