Alba Castle
Alba Castle was built at the foot of the Peña Alba, a peak in the Sierra del Aramo mountain range with an altitude of 1313 m above sea level.
The summit of Peña Alba provides a panoramic view of the Ubiña massif, Peña Rueda, the Sobia range, the Quirós valley, the Valdemurrio reservoir, etc.
The castle was built in the year 778 to defend the valley from Moorish attacks. It was part of the defensive system that was structured around the Camino Real de Quirós.
Later, it was to witness the war between Count Gonzalo Peláez and King Alfonso VII of León between 1132 and 1138.
Following this, Ferdinand II of León donated the castle to the Church of Oviedo, which in 1372 would be entrusted to Gonzalo Bernaldo de Quirós to be returned to the church by Enrique II of Trastámara.
Today, the castle is in ruins and only several walls, an aljibe (Arab submerged water tank) and the entrance gate remain.
