Prau Llagüezos
The upland pasture known as Prau Llagüezos is located at an altitude of 1,320 metres, ascending the Alto de La Cobertoria. It can be reached by a road that links the parish capital Pola de Lena with the village of Bárzana, located in the parish of Quirós. On leaving the Alto de La Cobertoria, an unclassified road leads directly to the site.
Prau Llagüezos is part of the Megalithic Necropolis of La Cobertoria, spread over the land that divides the Asturian municipalities of Lena and Quirós, and made up of six megaliths, one of which is located in Prau Llagüezos. The remaining five are distributed between La Mata'l Casare, Los Fitos and Collá Cimera.
Another peculiarity of this place is that every year, with the arrival of the Asturian summer on the first Sunday of July, the well-known celebration called 'Fiesta del Cordero' (Lamb festival) takes place; a special occasion which brings together residents of the municipalities of Quirós and Lena, as the site is located at the point of confluence between the two.
This well-known festival dates back to 1965 and originated after a group of friends from Lena who were working on the construction of a mountain refuge in the area got together to celebrate the end of the construction by roasting several lambs on the stake, a typical Asturian recipe that dates back centuries. In the following years, they decided to continue with the celebration, which was joined by residents from the surrounding area.
In 1984 it was declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest and is organised by the town councils of Lena and Quirós, seeing hundreds of people come to Prau Llagüezos to enjoy the celebrations.
The lamb on the stake is accompanied by bagpipers, a dance group, cider tasting and the Güelos del Aramo award, a tribute to the oldest couple in the area. There is also an open-air mass for anyone who wishes to attend.
The preparations for this celebration begin at six in the morning, at which time the rotisserie chefs meet to begin preparing the lamb, which will be accompanied by the famous chimichurri seasoning, for which each rotisserie has its own ancestral recipe.
