Bildeo Peak (Triangulation Station)
The Pico Bildeo triangulations station is located at an altitude of 1,241.7 m above sea level just inside the parish of Quirós. It can be reached via the AS-230 road, although after 10.8 km the rest of the way must be completed on foot.
A triangulation station is a cylindrical column with a square base about 1.2 m high that serves as a signal to indicate an exact position. It is part of a network of triangles with other stations and allows measurements to be taken and the mapping of terrain.
The Pico Bildeo triangulation station is one of the 11,000 stations that make up the triangulation network in Spain. Its origin dates back to 1852, although it took almost a century to complete.
The location of these markers is chosen for its elevation and clear terrain, thus allowing good visibility. The panoramic view has made Pico Bildeo one of the most popular points for finishing hikes in the area.
Since 1975, all triangulation stations have been protected, with any act of vandalism that might lead to their damage or destruction punishable by law. They carry a plaque that reads "Instituto Geográfico Nacional. Triangulation Station. Destruction of this sign is a punishable offence by law".
After the civil war and other circumstances such as industrial development or urban growth, many of the triangulation stations that constituted the network were lost. In response, the National Geographic Institute initiated a recovery plan in the 1970s. This plan, approved in 1982, spanned a decade and successfully reconstructed all the stations.
