Bello
The capital of the Concejo de Aller, Bello or Beyo in Asturian, is located in the extensive fertile valley of the Aller River. It is an ideal starting point for routes through the central mountains of Asturias. In addition, this quiet village has some interesting examples of traditional Asturian architecture.
In the hamlet of Bello, the 18th century Solís-Castañón House is especially noteworthy. It is a square two-storey structure. It has a three-story tower on the east side of the building. Its facade still has some elements from the original house such as the semicircular arch that leads to the fireplace. It has other traditional Asturian architectural elements such as the wooden corridor and the eaves.
This peaceful village is located in a spectacular setting within the Protected Landscape of the Cuencas Mineras. Its mountains outline the sky in a spectacular fashion and it is geologically important. It has been declared a Site of Geological Interest due to its stratigraphic, paleontological, mineralogical, metalogenetic, and sedimentological interest.
The resources of these mountain ranges were exploited in open-pit mining. In fact, it is known that a firedamp explosion occurred in one of its mines, the Carinsa Mine, which caused several deaths. Subsequently, an environmental restoration project was carried out to restore these beautiful areas.
Likewise, the Bello Mountains are a magnificent place for observing and photographing the stars. An excellent place to do this is the Coto-Bello viewpoint on Renorios Peak. From there you can see the entire plain and the beautiful Collá Pelluno.
Another very popular activity in Aller are the trail running competitions held in the area's mountains. One of them is the Coto Bello Trail that crosses the Coto-Bello viewpoint. It is a 12 km long race with an elevation gain of 1,200 meters. It is held during the Lamb Festival, where after the race lamb, a bottle of wine, and bread are given out. In addition, there is a quad race and a big open-air dance. The festivities in Bello are held on March 3 in honour of St. Maero, on March 19 in honour of St. Joseph, and on December 4 in honour of St. Barbara.
