Fresnedal
The small village of Fresnedal is located near the Marea River. Just 12 km from Infiestu, its rich meadows, abundant pastures, and beautiful old-growth forests really set it apart.
The town belongs to the parish of La Marea and reflects a past and present deeply linked to livestock and agriculture. There are hórreos and paneras (granaries on stilts) and other typical agrarian artifacts in the village confirming this fact.
On the other hand, it shows its modern side with the St. Anthony's Chapel. This is where locals attend church services without having to go to the St. Dominic of La Marea Church in the parish's capital. This hamlet is made up of a row of traditional Asturian mountain houses. They are located along the GR-105 trail that leaves Oviedo on the pilgrimage to Covadonga.
One thing that draws visitors to the town is the river and the hike along the Río la Marea waterway. The town is also close to the Sierra del Sellón, a magnificent place to hike through the mountains.
There is a wide variety of mushrooms in the area, making it a good place for mushroom collecting tours. Boletus, cantharellus, lactarius, agaricus and lepiota species are prevalent. In this area, an invasive mushroom from Australia and New Zealand called Devil's Fingers has been found. It is red coloured, tentacle-shaped, and gives off a rotting smell that attracts insects. It is believed that the species may have been originally brought during World War I by spores carried by Australian horses. It is remarkable because the first time this species was discovered in Spain was in 1968 and it is currently found in Fresnedal and spreading to the Cantabrian Mountains.
