Corvera
Corvera, one of the villages on the banks of the River Pas, is located in the municipality of Corvera de Toranzo, in the idyllic valley of Toranzo, in Cantabria. With some 300 inhabitants, it forms part of the Association of Municipalities of the Pasiegos Valley, a supra-municipal entity that brings together 14 municipalities and works to promote sustainable and self-sufficient development in the area.
Historically, the pasiega way of life has revolved around transhumant livestock farming, adapted to the environment. In winter, the Pasiegos lived in the riverside villages, where temperatures were milder; while in summer, they climbed up to their huts scattered across the mountains, where the livestock enjoyed fresh pastures. These Pasiega cabins, true emblems of the region's heritage, stand out for their functional simplicity: built in stone with gable roofs, they combine stables, storage and living quarters on two floors, reflecting the ingenuity of their inhabitants.
Over the last two decades, Corvera has diversified its economy, focusing on the industrial and hospitality sectors at the expense of traditional agriculture and livestock farming. Dairy production leads the industrial activity, while the hospitality industry is geared towards seasonal rural tourism, attracting visitors in search of nature and authenticity. Another source local pride is the famous sobao pasiego, a traditional square sponge bun that was granted a Protected Geographical Indication in 2004, and delights those who explore the local gastronomy.
The village stands out for its traditional architectural heritage, with imposing stone houses that evoke its history. Among them is the Casa Solariega de Díaz de Villegas, declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1992, a magnificent example of 17th century architecture that captivates with its elegance and solidity.
On 24 June, Corvera pulls out all the stops to celebrate its patron saint festivals in honour of San Juan Bautista. This day, full of joy and fervour, brings together neighbours and visitors in a festive atmosphere, with activities that reflect the community spirit and deep cultural roots of the locality.
