Rivera de la Froya
The southern part of the Arribes de Duero Natural Park is home to the Rivera de la Froya, a beautiful river that flows with great prodigious nature. This stream flows through the pastoral fields of the north-western region of the Comarca of El Abadengo and crosses a peaceful landscape immersed in country life until it joins the river Duero.
This beautiful stream has its source at the confluence of the Regatera de Valdesomas and the Arroyo Gallarón, near Lumbrales. From this vantage point, the route descends in a north-westerly direction until it reaches the Duero river to the north of the town of La Fregeneda. The precise location is between the Mirador de Mafeito and the Mirador de la Peña de La Vela. Along its course it passes through Hinojosa del Duero and close to the village of Valdenoguera, with a gradient of around 500 m.
The fluvial regime of the Froya riverbank is highly dependent on surface input, given that the materials on which the stream is settled are of low permeability. The climatology of this region is distinctive, characterised by a continental climate with an Atlantic influence. This results in hot, dry summers and cold, sub-humid winters. This is the reason why the river's banks are typically dry, and the stream carries little water in summer.
The banks of the Froya are a remarkable natural spectacle, boasting ash groves along the stream and a diverse array of flora and fauna. The surrounding area is home to a multitude of reptiles, insects, butterflies, and mammals, including the rare ladder snake and the fascinating dragonfly. The area also boasts a variety of avian species, including Bonelli's eagles, black storks, Montagu's harriers, Egyptian vultures, and other gliding birds such as griffon vultures. The Froya riverbank is suitable for fishing.
In addition to the natural surroundings, other infrastructure can be observed, such as the bridge built next to the former Valdenoguera station, which formed part of the Duero railway line. Despite its impressive design, the item has suffered from deterioration in its state of preservation over the years.
