The stream of Los Pilos
The stream of Los Pilos, a minor tributary of the Duero River, is situated near Pinilla de Fermoselle. It flows through the high slopes that descend into the canyon of the Duero. The site is situated within the Arribes del Duero Natural Park, where it contributes to the distinctive character of the local landscape.
The Pilos stream flows at a considerable velocity towards the Duero river's great meander. The stream's flow is relatively modest, and as it is a seasonal feature, it can carry only a small amount of water during the summer months. The bed of the river is supported by compact igneous materials, predominantly granite, although it also flows over the renowned local lithium-rich pegmatites. Over time, the surfaces have been eroded to create a series of stepped reliefs.
The water's descent is characterised by a profusion of holm oaks and junipers. Cornicabras were used by the inhabitants of Arribes del Duero to create wooden instruments, including cutlery, knife handles, and castanets. The surrounding area is also characterised by a profusion of other vegetation, including broom, rock roses, brooms and a variety of annual plants displaying a spectrum of colours. The combination of the Tolmos and granite berruecos has the effect of creating a hypnotic atmosphere to those passing by.
