Hydrography
Arroyo del Prado
One of the most notable characteristics of the Arribes del Duero National Park is the presence of numerous tributary streams, which flow in a graceful manner towards the Duero River. Arroyo del Prado is one of the numerous crystalline streams that flow over the gorge that separates Spain from Portugal.
Arroyo del Prado is within the municipality of Fariza de Sayago. The river originates in the extensive countryside between Fariza and Mámoles and flows into the great river Duero. The short stream has incised a deep channel into the granitic soil of the site, with the basin being bounded on its western side by a large fault that separates the granites from the schists.
The river's flow is significantly influenced by the season in which it is found. The quantity of water transported by a stream is largely dependent on the season.
The stream is bordered by a multitude of plant species, including holm oak and torvisco. A juniper forest reproduction area is located at the source and in the vicinity of the river's mouth.
The Carrascalico Stream joins the river at the river's mouth. The water flows in a cascading manner through a series of waterfalls of varying heights until it joins the Prado stream.
At this junction, there is an ancient structure that was once a pontoon, a small bridge constructed of granite blocks. These modest constructions are typical of the region and were employed to facilitate the crossing of the stream. The pontoon is supported by four granite blocks that continue to fulfil their original purpose.
