Villafranca de Duero
The town of Villafranca de Duero is situated on the banks of the Duero River in the province of Valladolid.
The roots of this village, located in the Tierra del Vino region, can be traced back to the Middle Ages, when it was founded during the Christian repopulation. The name of the settlement is likely derived from the Franks who settled in the area during the 11th century.
In terms of emblematic buildings, the church of Santa María Magdalena is a notable example. The church was constructed in 1981 on the site of an older brick and rammed earth church. The interior of the church features a Romanesque sculpture of a crucified Christ from the end of the 12th century. Additionally, the site features a 16th-century carving of Saint Mary Magdalene.
The economy of Villafranca de Duero has evolved over time, maintaining a close connection with agriculture and livestock farming, which have been key drivers of the local economy for generations. The surrounding fields demonstrate the community's ability to adapt to economic change, with traditional and modern cultivation practices evident. The most widely produced product is wine, with white wines produced under the D.O. Rueda designation and red wines produced under the D.O. Toro designation.
The festivities in Villafranca de Duero are a vibrant reflection of the local community. The solemn processions held during Holy Week attract both devotees and visitors alike. The festivities held in honour of Santa María Magdalena on 22 July are a time of joy and tradition, with a programme of music, bullfights, dances and cultural events that unite the community in a vibrant celebration. The local community celebrates San Isidro Labrador on 15 May and Santa Águeda on 5 February.
