Old railway bridge over the river
The railway bridge is situated over the Duero riverbed in the municipality of La Cistérniga.
This infrastructure was previously part of the closed Valladolid-Ariza railway line, which was inaugurated in 1895 by the company MZA (Compañía de los Ferrocarriles de Madrid a Zaragoza) with a length of 254 km and Iberian gauge.
The objective of this project was to establish a rail link between the Iberian Plateau and the Ebro Valley. It was included in the plan for the restructuring of the Spanish railway network, which was implemented during the government of the Restoration.
The old line, which crossed the historic region of Castilla la Vieja, was used by the Salamanca-Zaragoza train and the great Expreso from Barcelona to La Coruña. Furthermore, it facilitated connectivity with other railway routes, including the Torralba-Soria line and the Madrid-Zaragoza line.
In 1941, the nationalisation of the Spanish railway network resulted in the incorporation of this line into the Spanish National Railway Network (RENFE). Subsequently, in January 1985, the line was closed to passenger traffic, although it remained in operation for freight transport until 1994. At present, only the section between Valladolid and La Carrera remains operational.
The Iron Bridge connects the Valladolid towns of Tudela de Duero and Herrera de Duero. It is colloquially known as Puente de Tudela or Puente de Herrera. The bridge is located to the south of the municipality of La Cistérniga and is constructed from wrought iron. It has a straight beam and a lattice shape, allowing visitors to appreciate the banks of the Duero River and the medieval town of Fuentes de Duero in the distance.
