Pine Forest of San Pablo
The left bank of the Duero River is home to a significant pine forest, known as the Pine Forest of San Pablo.
The area is characterised by a significant pine tree population, with the species Pinus pinea dominating the landscape in many areas. This is an intriguing site where the ancient city of Pintia was constructed in the 4th century BC.
The Duero river forms the border of this plant group, which is made up of trees belonging to the Pinaceae family. The name of this plant group is derived from the large pine nuts it produces. The tree is a conifer that typically reaches a height of between 12 and 20 metres, although it can occasionally exceed 50 metres.
The bark is thick and reddish in colour, withstanding high temperatures and long periods without water. However, it is susceptible to extreme frosts. The wood of the stone pine is flexible and relatively lightweight, making it an ideal material for carpentry and shipbuilding. It is also used to produce charcoal.
Regarding the pine nut seeds, they are a common ingredient in the Mediterranean diet, particularly in sweet dishes. It is worth noting that our country is the world's leading producer of pine nuts.
