Bocos de Duero
Bocos de Duero is a municipality in the Campo de Peñafiel region of the province of Valladolid, 62 km from the provincial capital.
The municipality of Bocos is comprised of the town of the same name and a hamlet called Don Valeriano, which is also known as the Finca el Pinar. This hamlet is located just 3 km from the town centre.
The village is situated at the base of a hill in the Cuco valley, which is fed by the Duero river and the Cuco stream.
The term "bocos" is not clearly defined and there are several theories about its origin. One of the links the name to the different bodegas, "bocas" or "luceras," that are located throughout the town. Another source is the eddies formed by the Duero River as it passes through the municipality.
Meanwhile, the name "de Duero" was added at the beginning of the 20th century to differentiate the locality from another municipality of the same name located in the province of Burgos.
The town's origins can be traced back to prehistoric times, as evidenced by the discovery of various settlements in the western area of the breakwater, now known as Gurugú, which date back to between 1700 and 1100 BC.
The repopulation of these lands commenced in the early Middle Ages, following the Battle of Simancas in the 10th century. It was ordered by King Ramiro II of León to the then Count of Monzón. Subsequently, Bocos de Duero became part of the Community of Villa y Tierra de Curiel, created at the end of the 11th century.
The town's architectural monuments include the parish church of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves.
The Gothic-style building, constructed in the 13th century, comprises a single nave covered by a wooden frame, which also houses a bell tower. The interior of the church features a Baroque altarpiece from the 18th century, along with a Gothic image of the Virgen de las Nieves (14th century) and a choir loft decorated with 15th-century paintings.
Furthermore, Bocos has an old halt belonging to the Valladolid-Ariza railway line, which was operational between 1895 and 1994.
The patron saint festivities are held on 5 August in honour of the Virgen de las Nieves and on 29 August in honour of San Miguel Ángel.
Another of the most emblematic festivals in Bocos de Duero is the Valle del Cuco Culture Festival, which takes place in mid-May. A significant event, celebrated by five municipalities in the Valley.
