Chapel of San Juan
The chapel of San Juan is situated on the outskirts of the Burgos municipality of San Martín de Rubiales, on the banks of the Duero River.
This temple was constructed at the beginning of the 18th century, in 1708, in honour of San Juan Bautista.
The construction is straightforward, in the Baroque style, comprising a single nave with a rectangular ground plan and large dimensions, though it is sparsely ornamented. The interior of the building houses a stone altarpiece presided over by the image of the Virgin of Fatima.
Two significant local events are held at this chapel. Firstly, The feast of San Juan is celebrated on 24 July with a procession in the direction of the church. On 11 November, the traditional "passing of the torch" ceremony will take place at the chapel. A ceremony in which the younger generation receives the history, heritage and traditions of the village of San Martín de Rubiales from their elders.
