The former Berlanga station
The former Berlanga station, situated 2 km from Berlanga de Duero, was part of the Valladolid-Ariza railway line, which commenced operations on 1 January 1895. The station was constructed as a third-class facility to serve the Spanish railway network at the time. The original railway complex comprised a passenger terminal, a warehouse for goods, a water tank and some service tracks. The project was completed by a pair of hydraulic cranes.
Following a period of closure to passenger traffic, the line was finally closed to all traffic on 31 December 1985. Despite this, the station was reclassified as a loading bay for goods trains only and closed definitively on 15 September 1995.
The construction of the railway led to the establishment of a new suburb, situated between the municipalities of Berlanga and Aguilera, near Hortezuela. This area was designated as "La Estación". This neighbourhood, which today has very few houses, is shared between Berlanga de Duero and Bayubas de Abajo.
The oldest maps of the area show this nucleus under the name of "Casas del Batán". It has been reported that El Batán is a private estate belonging to the Tovar family. Local accounts indicate that various dwellings were constructed around the hacienda to provide accommodation for the estate's servants.
