Almarail Weir
The Almarail weir or dam is a small reservoir used to divert water from the Duero River to the Almazán Canal. The canal has a length of over 60 km and an irrigable area of 5,000 ha.
Construction of the dam and canal commenced in 1964 and, over the past 40 years, both have undergone significant maintenance and remodelling works.
The area is of great ornithological importance, being considered one of the most significant ornithological habitats in the province of Soria. It is home to a diverse range of species, including wood pigeons, coots, herons, grebes, ducks, moorhens, mallards, cormorants, marsh harriers, little bitterns, and others.
Since 2009, the Almarail weir has been home to a bird observatory, which has been used to monitor the local birdlife.
Furthermore, the location is surrounded by poplars and riverside vegetation, providing an ideal setting for those seeking to disconnect in harmony with nature.
