Poplar Production
Production poplar groves are tree formations of the genus Populus, comprising highly productive clones. The trees have a high growth rate and a relatively short felling season. The felling process is carried out across the entire surface of the poplar grove, after which new saplings are planted.
The genus Populus is sometimes referred to as aspen trees.
These trees are known for their rapid growth and potential to reach considerable sizes, with some species reaching heights of up to 30 metres. The tree's distinctive appearance is characterised by flexible branches and smooth, whitish or ashy bark. The tree is dioecious, with male and female flowers occurring on separate individuals.
This genus is native to temperate regions of the northern hemisphere. However, it has been introduced to the southern hemisphere, where it can be found in Europe, parts of Asia, North America and Africa.
The high-quality wood and rapid growth of these species (up to 20m3/ha/year and up to 16 years of age) have made them an attractive option for cultivation. Poplar wood is primarily used to produce plywood, although it is occasionally employed in the fabrication of low-density furniture.
