The bridge of Santo Domingo
The bridge of Santo Domingo is situated in the municipality of Covaleda, in the province of Soria. Although it is believed to have been constructed in the 12th century, the exact chronology is unclear.
The bridge is a single-span structure comprising a large barrel vault with a span of 7 m and ramped abutments. It has a total length of 18.50 m and a maximum height of 4 m.
Its distinctive nature led to its designation in 2000 as an Asset of Cultural Interest, with the category of monument, by the Directorate General for Cultural Heritage and Promotion.
Despite its protected status, the condition of the figure was such that its long-term survival was at risk. Consequently, some work has been carried out to ensure its restoration.
In 2021, the Covaleda Town Council and the Junta de Castilla y León collaborated on a project to reinforce the bridge's main structure. This involved consolidating the walls, footings, and abutments. Additionally, the surrounding area was rehabilitated to improve flood management. This included clearing vegetation and scrub from the river's overflow areas.
Furthermore, a footbridge constructed from treated laminated wood has been installed, linking the bridge's entrance and exit and enabling pedestrian use.
