As Meiroás
Located in the parish of Santa María de Esgos, As Meiroas is a small rural nucleus with a population of around 30 inhabitants, whose economy is based mainly on the primary sector. The place is surrounded by an agricultural mosaic of different crops, although the agricultural estates on its periphery are in disuse and scrubland is conquering the terrain.
Its architectural heritage is related to the agricultural occupation of its inhabitants; in addition to the eira (threshing floor) and the hórreos (granaries), it also has a communal oven.
The town celebrates the festival of San Cibrao on the first weekend of September. The festival begins on Friday with a popular barbecue and continues with festive activities on Saturday and Sunday.
The name As Meiroas is quite common in the area; there is even another place belonging to the same parish called A Meiroa. Its etymological origin could be related to the idea of wet ground or mud, suggesting a past in which water played an important role in the configuration of the landscape.
