River Esgos
The River Esgos rises on the slope known as Tapada do Crego, which means "Priest's Lid/Cap", to the east of the locality of Arcos. It marks the eastern boundary of Esgos, to which it gives its name, before flowing into the Do Grañal River. Its waters converge in the River Loña and continue their journey until they reach the River Miño, north of Ourense.
The word Esgos could have a pre-Indo-European origin related to the word regueiro, which means "stream". In medieval documents, the river is mentioned with the prefix Al- (Alesgos), a common form of naming watercourses in that era, as this prefix represented the concept of water, current or torrent. As Alesgos can be understood as a reiteration of "river-river", over time only the second part of the word remained.
Esgos has many fluvial channels, but only two are recognised with the rank of rivers due to their flow and length. Both have already been mentioned: the Do Grañal River and its tributary, the River Esgos.
