Shrine of the Virxe do Monte
Situated in the parish of Loña do Monte, in the municipality of Nogueira de Ramuín, right on the border with the municipality of Esgos, a locality with which it shares a history wrapped in legend.
According to tradition, the Virxe do Monte appeared in Xaravedra, within the municipality of Esgos. This revelation caused discord among the neighbouring villages, as they could not agree on where the shrine should be built. To resolve the dispute, the image of the Virgin was placed on an ox cart and allowed to advance without a guide. The place where the cart stopped was where the church was erected.
The building is constructed of stone and bears the engraved date 1770, although its origin could be older, as there is a mention of this shrine in a book about the Monastery of San Pedro de Rocas dated 1509. However, it is uncertain whether this referred to the present building or to an earlier construction.
In the immediate vicinity of the shrine there is a cruceiro, a fountain and a recreational area where the popular romaría meal is held on 15 August. Visitors can also enjoy beautiful views of the landscape surrounding the church.
